Zambia: Lower Zambezi National Park

Countries > Zambia> Lower Zambezi National Park

Park Overview

Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 1,580 square miles in southern Zambia, with much of its liveliness and resources being shared with Zimbabwe. The Lower Zambezi is Zambia’s newest park and as such is still relatively undeveloped, but it’s beauty lies in its raw wilderness state. The diversity of big game animals is not as wide as the other big parks, but visitors have a great opportunity to get close to the game that wanders in and out of the Zambezi River. Though most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor, there is a physical land barrier on the northern end that keeps the animals from wandering elsewhere. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the River’s edge. ‘Island hopping’ buffalo and waterbuck are also common. Gameviewing would not be complete without a lion sighting, which is also a possibility here.

Chiawa

Situated inside the Lower Zambezi National Park, Chiawa camp has eight spacious safari tents with en-suite facilities, set on wooden decks, and each with its own exclusive view of the Mighty Zambezi river. The thatched lounge, bar and dining areas look onto the Zambezi River where animals regularly frequent, and a reed enclosed fire place is the venue for delicious barbecues and cocktails by starlight. Activities include walking safaris, nocturnal drives, birding, river safaris, and catch & release angling. With the help of professional guides, guests have the opportunity to see elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and over 300 species of birds.

Sausage Tree Camp

Sausage Tree camp is nestled amongst mature mahogany trees and a large shady Sausage Tree on the banks of the Zambezi, opposite the Mana Pools National Park. The camp can accommodate twelve guests in six large, cool, oval-shaped marquee-style tents, each privately located with expansive river views, and simple classic decor. Each tent includes en-suite bathrooms with cold running water (hot water available in request), flush loos, and a private area for afternoon siestas. There is a main tent and dining area. The Lower Zambezi National Park and river offers a range of activities unique to Africa: day and night game drives, wilderness walks, canoeing, boat game viewing, birding and fishing.
