Two hundred miles down the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, is a place so remote that only the true adventure seeker will ever reach it - Mahale Mountains National Park. Accessible by light aircraft and Tanganyika dhow (no roads or vehicles in the park), it is an unspoiled wildlife sanctuary. With lush mountains rising up to a height of 8000 feet, this is the home range of roughly 1000 wild chimpanzees. Within an hour or two of walking from your camp, you can see these apes, who accept visitors presence completely.
Gombe lies at the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika. The Park is a neighbor to the Mahale Mountains. Gombe's semi-tropical mountain forests, which help define the Great Rift Valley, are home to the chimpanzees that Jane Goodall studies. Though Goodall has invested more time studying Gombe Stream's chimp population than anyone else, guests to this area can find these fascinating creatures for themselves. The chimps are accustomed to humans and therefore somewhat approachable.
