Kenya: Masai Mara Game Reserve

Park Overview

Located in Southwestern Kenya and covering an area approximately 932 square miles, lies the "Jewel of Kenya." The Masai Mara is the site of one of the largest and the most spectacular animal migration areas in the world. The Mara's varied topography, which ranges from woodland to grassland to riverine forest and bushland, supports a concentration of game surpassing many national parks in Africa. It is home to the 'big five' - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. The annual migration of an estimated 2.2 million wild animals across the Mara - Serengeti ecosystem is the largest wildlife migration in the world. The Mara lions are not only abundant but easily recognizable by their fabulous black manes. The shy and largely nocturnal Mara leopard inhabits dense bushland, woodland and rocky habitats. For most visitors, the sighting of a leopard is the highlight of a visit to the Mara. The Masai Mara is a must for all serious game viewers.

The "Big Five" will be supplemented by countless plains game: wildebeest, zebra, impala, Thompson's gazelles, waterbuck, bushbuck, giraffe, jackel and hyena. The birdwatcher may look forward to an area possessing over four hundred species of birds.

Governors Camp Private Camp

Governors Camp is in a magical setting. So much so that almost a century ago, it was reserved exclusively for Kenya’s Colonial Governors and their Royal visitors. Now Governors’ Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, its waters teeming with Hippo and Crocodile. The tents are in the classic safari-style, spacious and tasteful. Some tents line the riverbank, others have views across the sweeping plains. Each has its own en-suite bathroom with constant hot and cold running water, flushing toilets, even bidets.
